It’s equipped with flat-plate 55-mm burrs made of stainless steel with precision engineering design. It produces uniform and consistent grounds at 1725 RPM. With a 166 watts motor weighing 11.5 pounds, it’s relatively quiet at 70db when grinding. A double-shot dose of coffee only takes about 20 seconds to grind or up to 7.7 pounds per hour. It’s not surprising that it can be used in light commercial coffee bars as well as for home use.

The added bonus is an overheat protection device that will shut down the grinding to protect the motor or the burrs from damage.

Hopper Size & Material

The bean hopper can hold about 10.5 oz. of coffee beans that’s made of heavy plastic tinted with blue UV resistant protection. The tint is supposed to protect the beans from the sun and keep them fresher and longer. The size is perfect for home use when you host a party. Grind enough coffee ahead of time so you don’t have to generate the noise when your guests are around. It’s not excessively large that coffee beans might turn stale in the hopper.

There are only two switches in this machine. The Power On/Off switch is on the right hand side and the grind one sits in the front for good visibility.

With 55 stepped settings, you can practically dial in any one based on your brew needs. Turkish coffee, espresso or French press is just a simple press down of the button away while rotating the hopper sideways from 0 to 55.

The advantage of a doserless grinder is that you can dispense coffee grounds directly to a portafilter placed on the built-in filter support. Or to a ground coffee container. No need to worry about the portafilter size as it can accommodate any sizes. And you are in total control when it comes to the dosing amount.

Housing Material

The grinder is made from stainless steel with aluminum frame. The sleek design and narrow silhouette with stainless and black color combination will make a bold statement on your counter next to a high-end espresso machine. It doesn’t hog a lot of counter space either.

Pros & Cons

  • Solid-built, sturdy and will last for many years.
  • With prosumer parts and features, it delivers consistent and quality grounds.
  • The compact form doesn’t take too much precious counter space.
  • The 55 settings will meet all your coffee grinding needs from coarse to fine and it’s very easy to adjust the dial.
  • The uniform grounds are the key to perfect espressos with thick crema, stronger flavor and drier puck for easy cleanup.
  • The front grind switch is very convenient to operate.
  • The doserless feature makes it very versatile to dose the grounds to a portafilter or a container.

  • You’ll have to hold down on the toggle switch to grind the entire time. It presents a challenge if you need to adjust the coarseness level as you have to press down the switch while turning the hopper AND keep the grinding going at the same time. So three hands are needed in this scenario.
  • Oily beans tend to get stuck in the bean hopper.
  • The grounds are somewhat clumpy that you may have to chop the clumps up to make them more evenly distributed.
  • Have to grind the beans first, then fill the portafilter basket instead of accomplishing these two steps in one with a doser grinder.

Consumer Reviews

4.3 out of 5.0

The Rancilio Rocky has garnered 4.3 out 5 star ratings by Amazon reviewers. 84% of them give it 4-5 stars citing that it’s built to last and the precise ground coffee helps them pull perfect espresso shots with full-bodied taste and 4mm crema.

On the other extreme, customers complain about it’s messy due to the static it generates and takes time to clean up. Coffee beans tend to get stuck beneath the hopper cover. You’ll have to dislodge the hopper and push the beans around to get it going again.

At the review, this model was priced just under $350.00. I know it’s pretty expensive for a coffee grinder for those of us who think that a grinder shouldn’t cost more than $50, let alone over $300. But if you ask any savvy home barista, he or she will tell you that this is the most crucial investment you should make in ensuring quality espresso.

Summary of Rancilio Rocky Coffee Grinder

It’s for very obvious reasons that the Rancilio Rocky Doserless Coffee Grinder has won so many people over by its commercial-grade burrs to grind consistent and quality coffee. The hefty motor and the quiet operation makes it stand out among many competing grinders in this price range. The ultra-granular threadings allow you to grind grounds of all sizes whether you’d like a cup of espresso or a latte to start your day.

It’s very likely that this will be your first and last coffee grinder for a long time regardless of upgrading your espresso machine or not.
