Nespresso Pixie Espresso Machine Review

Nespresso Pixie D60 Espresso Machine is one of the smallest (as high as 8 nespresso capsules stacked up and as wide as a tablespoon) and perhaps the cutest single-serve espresso machines on the market. The cute factor doesn’t diminish the style, jewel-toned color choices and most importantly, the functionality.

This compact machine enables you to make a very tasty espresso from a drop of a premeasured capsule without grinding, dosing, tamping and pulling with the fastest ready to brew temperature in under 30 seconds. No loose coffee grinds or drips to clean up. It’s fool-proof to operate. And it takes hardly any counter space. Doesn’t this sound too good to be true? I’ll let you be the judge.

Features & Benefits Nespresso Pixie

  • 19-Bar Pressure Pump: While this is a single serve machine, it doesn’t compromise on the quality of the pump. The 19-bar pressure is more than what this machine needs.
  • Volumetric Options: The Pixie lets you brew either Espresso or Lungo with two easy-to-push buttons. You can also manually adjust the brew volume by holding down one of the volume buttons until it reaches to your desired brew amount.
  • 24 Fl. Oz Water Reservoir: This is a smaller water reservoir comparing to a regular espresso machine. But it’s a perfect size if you just need one or two shots per day. The 24 ounces would allow you to brew 12 or so single shots a day. It is located in the back of the machine and can be refilled from the top. There is no water filter so you might want to use filtered or bottled water to minimize the mineral deposit. There is also a low-level water detection light to give you a heads up when refill is needed.
  • Vibrant Colors: One of the cool factors in the Nespresso Pixie is the color options. You can choose from brick red, electric yellow/lime, steel blue, aluminum, brown, or gray, just to name a few. Not all retail outlets carry all the colors. This little machine can add such a splash of accent color to your otherwise industrial kitchen appliances.
  • Energy Efficient: The Pixie will shut down automatically after 9 minute inactivity. The shut-off timing can be reprogrammed longer than 9 minutes.
  • Foldable Drip Tray: The drip tray is foldable to make room for a taller espresso cup when pulling a lungo shot.
  • Removable Used Capsule Container: After brewing, the used capsule will be dropped into the container when you pull the lever up. This container holds 10 used capsules before you have to empty it.

You can’t find any other espresso machine as this one as far as easy operation is concerned. To brew a shot of espresso, follow these simple steps:

  1. Fill the water tank with filtered/bottled water.
  2. Switch the “Power” on and wait for 25 seconds until the indicator light is on.
  3. Lift the lever up and insert a capsule of your choice.
  4. Place a warmed cup on the Drip Tray or fold the tray into the upright position for a long shot.
  5. Press either the “Espresso” or “Lungo” button (1.35 oz or 3.7 oz).
  6. Remove the espresso cup and lift the lever up to eject the used capsule into the container.

The purchase doesn’t come with a milk frother. You have two options. One is to purchase a frother called Nespresso Aeroccino or buy a bundled Pixie that comes with the frother. The bundled option saves you a bit of money than purchased separately. I’d recommend you choose the latter just to give you the flexibility to make a cup of cappuccino or latte.

One quick note to let you know when you buy the bundled option, the included frother is a previous model. The most current version has been improved with some cosmetic as well as functional features priced higher than the previous model.  The price difference between the two on Amazon is less than $10. If you want to match your Pixie color with the same in the Aeroccino, you’ll have to buy a single unit.

Display & Control

The unit has a push-button operation with three buttons: Power On/Off, Espresso and Lungo (single or double shot). That’s it. These buttons will be illuminated with backlight when ready for operation.

Additional Features

No additional features to speak of. But as I eluded before, there is an array of beautiful colors to choose from. Here is a comparison table for your quick reference.

How to Clean

Not much to clean other than emptying the used capsule container when it’s full. You may pull out the Drip Tray along with the Used Capsule Container. It’s recommended that you descale the unit every two months.

Included Accessories

16 espresso capsules are included in this purchase. They come in different shot sizes and flavors with varying coffee intensity.

Optional Accessories

As I mentioned earlier, a Nespresso frother would be a great addition unless you know you don’t need frothy drinks at all nor your spouse or house guest.

Given the Nespresso capsules are proprietary, you don’t have other option but buying them from Nespresso or through Amazon. I suggest you give the 16 capsules a try to figure out which is/are your favorites. Then you can order more from either Nespresso’s website or Amazon. Depending on the flavor and size, each capsule will cost anywhere from $0.50 to $1.00. I know it’s not cheap, but it’s way cheaper than getting a shot or two from a coffee house for sure.

Pros & Cons

  • It’s so intuitive to use and ergonomically designed.
  • Swiss made from aluminum in the main body and heavy plastic in the rest.
  • The small footprint and light weight allow you to travel with it in your carryon bag or suitcase so you can have a decent espresso to start your day.
  • The 30 second brew time is the fastest enjoyment you can ask for.
  • No mess, no fuss and no clean up.
  • The espresso is aromatic, tasty with crema on top.
  • The used capsule is recyclable if you are into the “green” revolution.
  • The beautiful color selection helps match your color décor in the kitchen or the office.
  • The auto shut-off feature helps save energy and you don’t have to wreak your brain to remember whether or not you turn the unit off in the morning.
  • It’s much quieter than a full-sized espresso machine.

  • The smaller water tank means you’ll have to refill it more often. But it’s also a good thing to have fresh water.
  • You’ll have to reorder the proprietary espresso capsules from Nespresso or Amazon.
  • The Nespresso website is a challenge to navigate and the follow-up email communication after a purchase is somewhat inconsistent.

Consumer Reviews

4.1 out of 5.0

80% of the reviewers on Amazon are very happy with the machine that helps them start their morning routine effortlessly. The quality and consistency of the espresso is quite impressive at this price point and as a single serve machine.

There are other customers who would like to control every variable along the way to make sure the shot comes out just the way they like it. Clearly, this machine is not meant for them. You can only order the capsules from Nespresso or Amazon.

It’s priced under $250 depending on the color. Some are cheaper and others might be a little bit more.

Summary of Nespresso Pixie D60

Nespresso Pixie was designed for those who are on the go and don’t have that much time to fuss over in making an espresso from scratch. Everything was done for you by Nespresso except for popping in a capsule and pushing two buttons to get your morning Joe. This machine produces surprisingly good espresso with thick crema from an assortment of varying intensity and flavors. You can forget about the hassles of grinding, tamping, temperature surfing, and cleaning the portafilter between shots and the other mess.

If you are in the mood for a creamy latte, add the Nespresso Aeroccino to your shopping list to heat up some milk in no time. You’d enjoy the same trouble-free and whispering quiet operation in this milk frother.

Whether you want to get this for your home, office or buy it as a present for graduation, wedding, Mother or Father’s Day, the recipient will be forever thankful for this thoughtful gesture and enjoy it for years to come.
