Features & Benefits

  • Double Stainless Steel Thermostats: First off, it’s equipped with two separate thermostats to ensure the proper temperatures for brewing and frothing on demand. There is no downtime from frothing to brewing and vice versa.
  • Commercial-Grade Burr Grinder: This is a standard feature in all Jura Impressa line with 6 grind settings to meet your needs. To make espresso, the setting should be set on the finer end. Make sure you play around and adjust until you get the perfect dial.
  • 10 Oz. Bean Container: This is a larger container comparing to Impressa C and J lines by a couple of ounces. As usual, use the freshest roasted beans as you can get your hands on and avoid oily and flavored beans if you can help it. As the oil in coffee beans might clog the grinder. Another solution is to leave the oily beans in an open bowl for a few hours to let the oil evaporate a bit. As usual, a bypass funnel is available to test different grounds or use it to make decaf drinks.
  • 96 Fluid Ounce Water Tank: This size works well for a small office as well for home use, especially when you and your family drink quite a few coffees in a day. A standard water filter cartridge is available should you decide to use it to eliminate the need for descaling.
  • Program and Override on the Fly: Water volume, coffee strength, brewing temperature and milk amount in terms of frothing and steaming all can be reprogrammed from the standard factory setting. You can also change anything on the fly if you have a house guest who would like a particular combo between all the brewing elements. Even hot water temperatures are varied in three settings.
  • Adjustable Brewing Spouts: From 2.6 to 5.8 inches, you can use such a variety of cup sizes for home or travel.
  • Plastic Housing with Platinum Finish: Comparing to Impressa models before, the S9 exults a classy, trendy and superior appearance. It’s slightly larger and boxier in shape. Make sure you have a dedicated counter space to park this showy piece.
  • Self-Cleaning Cycles: Rinsing, Cleaning and Descaling cycles are programmed in the unit that it will prompt you when any is due.

Follow Jura’s instructions to prepare the machine for the first time use. Then it’s a matter of setting the timer for each morning and the machine will be turned on to preheat. When you come to the kitchen, add water and beans. Warm up the cup from either the cup warmer or dispense some hot water in the cup to rinse it out. Place the cup or cups. Select the beverage you’d like for that day, the S9 will follow its programmed routine to grind, tamp, pre-soak the beans and extract the espresso.

If you are a cappuccino drinker, you are in luck with the one touch cappuccino frothXpress Plus system. It has an insulated stainless steel milk canister that’s hooked up to the frothing wand via a short hose. You can adjust the dial from 12 to 6 o’clock position from maximum frothing, steaming + frothing to just steaming.

Again with one touch button, a cup of cappuccino will be made by first siphoning chilled milk from the canister, frothed or steamed and heated and delivered to the cup under the spout. Then you can choose to have a short pause or not in order for the milk to settle for a few seconds for better presentation. S9 will know when to brew a shot or two espressi and dispensed to the frothed milk. All steps are done within 60 seconds or so. The same works for lattes with the Latte button. It can’t get any easier than this, is it?

Display & Control

A combination of push-buttons and a rotary dial is how you’d program different settings and change anything on a whim. On the left of the front panel, you’ll see four buttons for making espresso/coffee and on the right above the frother are the buttons for Cappuccino or Latte.

On the left behind an Access door, there is a Rotary dial where you can program different functions such as Language, Product Counter, Water Hardness Level/Water Filter Activation and so on.

You can conceive and program so many different variations of beverages with the option to change brew volume, 5 coffee strengths, 2 brewing and 3 hot water temperatures and amount of milk and frothing delivered in an increment of seconds. The longer the time, the more milk is dispensed and frothed/steamed at perfect temperature of 150 degrees F.

The display panel shows a “progress report” while performing any of the functions so you can visually see if it’s about 25% or 90% complete.

Additional Features

The electronic sensors constantly monitors the bean hopper, water tank, drip tray and used coffee container to display a message if any needs to be refilled or cleaned. It’s hard to make a mistake of running the grinder on an empty hopper with this feature.

Oh, one more thing! The dispensing spouts are illuminated when brewing is on so you can take in visually of a perfect espresso looks alike.

How to Clean

Besides stocking up the mandated cleaning and descaling supplies, the machine prompts you for everything else once you set up the cleaning cycles. The cleaning takes about 15 minutes or so and descaling 45 minutes. The by-pass doser is doubled up as an outlet to insert a cleaning tablet.

Consumer Reviews

4.2 out of 5.0

76% of the reviewers on Amazon shared their very positive experience with the S9. What they liked the best about it was first and forecast the brew quality, programmability and how easy it was to use and clean. Some of them have owned the unit for years and others use it in an office setting where many espresso and cappuccinos are made on a given day.

Like any other product, a handful of people had bad experience with different repair needs. When outside of the 2-year warranty period, it did cost these people $275 each time the unit was sent in for some repair. Complaints were from not fast enough to produce steam to coffee not tasting good. Take it as what’s worth as there are so many things that could go wrong, not all are attributed to the machine’s poor design.

It was priced under $2,500 on Amazon with over 20% off from Jura’s List Price. It’s indeed a chunk of change. It might be hard to justify spending this much on an espresso machine for some unless you have the money and would enjoy a world-class unit.

But for an office, it’s much easier to rationalize the investment as so many people will enjoy the drinks every day.

Jura Capresso Impressa S9 is the “Maserati of Coffee Makers” as one reviewer put it. It’s designed with style, high-end performance features and idiot-proof operation. Whether you use for one espresso or many, it is fully capable to satisfy your demand.

What you are also paying is the prestige of owning a Swiss-made machine that delivers on quality, convenience, agility and the “infinite” customizations with your “signature” on it.
