Jura Impressa J9 One Touch Espresso Machine Review

As the proud winner of the 2012 Housewares Design Awards in Countertop Cooking and Beverage Appliance category, Jura Impressa J9 One Touch Super-Automatic Espresso Machine boasts style, intuitive user interface and exceptional performance to brew coffeehouse quality and style of drinks in less than 60 seconds.

The J9 inherited the standard features of the Jura J line but added a few unique characteristics that make it a flagship model in Jura’s espresso machine collections. The most distinct enhancement is the 3 ½ Thin-Film-Transistor (TFT) crystal display screen which applies a reflective technology to stay on very low power consumption. Programming your drinks can be done through the touch buttons in the Display Panel or use the Rotary Dial on top of the unit and select the drink based on the symbols. It can’t get easier than this even a child can use the machine. Here are some of the noticeable features:

Features & Benefits

  • Integrated Conical Burr Grinder with 8.8 Oz. Bean Hopper: The bean container sits in the top back of the unit with a sealed lid to prevent coffee from getting stale. The grind dial is housed in the right hand side with the hidden storage space with 6 settings from coarse to fine. It’s just a matter of experimenting with types of roast and the drink. As a rule of thumb, the grind size should be on the finer side for espresso but not too fine resulting in over-extraction and bitter taste.
  • By-Pass Doser: Convenient to try out a different coffee or brew a decaf drink for someone in your house. You can use up to 2 scoops of pre-ground coffee and the unit is very smart to let you know if you don’t add enough coffee to the doser.
  • 73.5 Water Tank: This is a very generous size that allows brew after brew without the need for refill. The Clearyl Blue water filter is highly recommended if the water hardness exceeds a certain level. The other benefit is that with the filter cartridge activated, you don’t need to descale the machine – saving time and money.
  • Customizing Your Brews: You can program the brew volume (0.5 to 8 oz.), coffee strength up to 5 levels (extra-mild, mild, normal, strong and extra-strong), 2 brew temperatures (normal and high – from 176 to 205 degrees F), 3 hot water temperatures as in Low, Normal and Xhigh (149 to 203F).
  • One Touch Cappuccino/Latte Macchiator System: With the touch of a button, you can make cappuccinos and lattes without ever moving the cup.
  • Adjustable Dispensing Spouts: There are two dispensing spouts: one for brewing espresso and coffee and another for cappuccinos, lattes and hot water. The espresso spouts can be adjusted both in width and height (2.6 to 4.37″) with a so-called butterfly design. The one for milk-based drinks can accommodate cups from 4.4 to 6 inches. This is a feature that’s rarely available in many similar products on the market. The icing on the cake is the spot light by the brewing spouts that let you see visually when the brew is coming out. We humans are creatures of multiple senses – sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. The most enjoyment one can have is when all the senses are present.
  • Compact and Stylish: With all the added features, the J9 still resembles the size and dimensions of many of the Jura models. This unit definitely has more pizazz such as chrome-front with mirror finish and the Piano Black sides and back is contrasted with a glossy double-coated lacquer. This high-end minimalistic design complements any decor.

Two things you’ll need to do to brew delicious coffee drinks are filling the water tank with fresh water and bean hopper with fresh coffee beans. Then either use the Rotary Dial and the Selector to choose your drink or the same via the Push-Buttons in the Control Panel. You can go along with the factory setting or reprogram everything to suit your taste from the amount of coffee, water volume, brewing temperature and volume of milk.

Jura did an excellent job in the User Manual, Quick Reference Guide and an Instructional DVD. This is perhaps the easiest espresso machine to operate for anyone.

The frothing system is inserted into the wand and connected to a stainless steel vacuum milk container through a short hose or a long hose if you use your milk carton directly from the fridge. Adjust the dial for Froth or Steam, place a cup under the delivery spout, you are in business. The frother siphons the milk from the container, heats up and either frothes or steams per your need. Then a short pause followed by grinding, tamping, pre-infusing to wet the coffee ground and extracting. The amount of milk is delivered by the number of seconds from 3 to 120 seconds. The longer the time, the more milk is siphoned. Jura equipped the frother with the Fine Foam Technology that’s capable of producing feather-light microfoam and creamy drinks.

Display & Control

As I mentioned before, you can select your beverages from either the Rotary Dial on top or from the TFT Display Panel. Either way, it doesn’t take much time to get a handle on it as it’s so user-friendly.

The Display screen is organized by subsets such as Product Settings where you can choose your favorite beverage and settings. The Machine Setting screen allows you to choose Language, Display in Background, Color and Contrast. Speaking of screen background, you’ll have a multitude of background images to choose from: red coffee berry, blue sky with clouds, roasted coffee beans, white coffee flower, green leaves, white background, tan background and green coffee berry.

Additional Features

The Energy Save Mode (E.S.M.) helps conserve energy while the machine is idle for a period of time. The factory setting is at 2 hour after last use but you can reset it to shorter or longer depending on your usage pattern.

How to Clean

J9 prompts a rinse before and after each brew. It’s important to be diligent about rinsing the frother as milk will dry up and clog the air hole. Cleaning the machine to remove the coffee oil, descaling the unit to get rid of calcium deposit and changing the water filter are the necessary “evils” to take care of. The good news is that the J9 will prompt you when any task is due. In addition, it will tell you when to empty the drip tray, the used coffee container in addition to when to refill the water and bean container.

Consumer Reviews

3.8 out of 5.0

2/3 of the reviewers like the machine for the great drinks it produces, the customization options and the ease of operation. The other 1/3 are not thrilled with the housing materials as plastic at this price point and lack of piping hot milk temperature.

It’s not an exaggeration to say you might need to take a small loan to get this. At the review, it was listed just under $3000 on Amazon which was about 20% discount from Jura’s List Price.
