Features & Benefits

  • Grinder: The integrated commercial grade burr grinder has 6 settings to meet your brewing needs from coarse to fine. Different from a blade type, the burr grinder minimizes the friction and excessive heat during grinding resulting in very consistent particle size for maximum flavor and crema. The hopper can hold 7 oz. of fresh beans with a by-pass doser in case you’d like to try different flavors of preground or decaf coffee.
  • 64 Oz. Water Tank with Filtration System: It’s side-loaded on the left so you don’t have to remove the entire unit for refill. It’s recommend that a water filtration system be activated to reduce the chlorine and other impurities in tap water to prolong the life of the machine as well as to make more flavorful drinks.
  • Thermoblock Heating System with 15-Bar Pump Pressure: Like many Jura super-automatic, the C5 heats water efficiently for optimal brewing and steaming temperature through a thermoblock. The 15-bar pump provides more than adequate pressure to extract the maximum flavor from the fresh coffee grounds.
  • Dual Frother Plus: The panerello frother makes it possible to froth or steam for your milk-based drinks. The heat up time from brewing to steaming is about 30 seconds.
  • Programmable Water Volume and Adjust Coffee Strength on the Fly: You may reprogram water volume for less or more to your liking beyond the factory settings for one and two cups of espresso or coffee. Adjusting coffee strength can only be done on the fly from 5 to 16 grams of ground coffee measured in delivery time from 5 to 9 seconds (milder to stronger).
  • Built-in Rinse, Cleaning and Descaling Program: You don’t want to be bothered with remembering when to perform maintenance? No problem! The unit will display icons for each maintenance task. Depending on the water hardness testing, the frequency of descaling can be adjusted in the input via the Display Panel.

The User Instruction outlines every step from how to prepare the machine for the first time use to how to brew your first cup of espresso. Make sure you read it word by word. Even though you might have owned another Jura espresso maker before, each model has its own unique features and quirks.

All the hard work will be handled by the unit. What’s left for you is to fill the water tank and coffee bean hopper. Power it on and select your cup size and adjust coffee strength if so desired. The C5 will grind, tamp, heat up water, moist the grounds and then extract. Watch automation at work.

This part does require your participation to fill the pitcher with cold milk. Insert the frothing wand into the milk surface. If frothing, make sure the sleeve of the frother is pushed down and the same pushed up for steaming. If you are a seasoned home barista, you may be able to decide when the milk is ready by touch in how hot the milk feels on your hand.

Optionally, you can use a liquid thermometer and wait till the temperature reaches between 140 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Then pour the frothed or steamed milk into the espresso. Go ahead and you can get even fancier by making an espresso art in the cup. Remember always use a milk jug or pitcher twice as big as the amount of milk to allow room for froth or cream to build up.

Display & Control

The Display Panel consists of a rotary dial and push buttons. On the top left corner, it’s the Rotary Dial surrounded by beverage buttons (from left to right) for: 1 Espresso, 2 Espressi, 1 Coffee, 2 Coffees. As I touched on earlier, pushing any of the beverage button down allows you to reprogram the water volume.

Below this, there is a hidden panel behind an Access Door. Two rows of indicator icons (from top, left to bottom, right): Fill Water, Empty Tray, Fill Beans; Clean, Decalcify and Water Filter.

On the front right, there is another Selector to choose Cup for coffee or Water for Hot Water or Steam.

A cup warmer is available on top of the unit with passive heat generated from the heating element.

How to Clean

Cleaning entails several tasks broken down into daily and periodic routines:

  1. Cleaning the exterior housing with a damp cloth
  2. Rinse the water tank daily and refill with fresh water before brewing
  3. Rinse the frother tip to remove any milk residue. The frother tip comes off and reassemble as three pieces very easily.
  4. Cleaning the interior of the unit with the manufacturer specified tablet after 200 coffees or so prompted by a Message and Cleaning light. The purpose is to remove the coffee oil buildup in the brewing chamber which takes about 15 minutes to complete.
  5. Decalcifying procedure takes about 45 minutes with the integrated program. You will need to use Jura decalcifying tablet for each procedure. If you activate the Clearyl water filter, there is no need to decalcify.

Consumer Reviews

4.1 out of 5.0

A majority of the reviewers love the Jura Impressa C5 for the quality of coffee drinks it makes and how effortless it is to use it. Some people have personal experience in comparing the drinks by C5 vs. another brand, the contrast is night and day. On the contrary, a small percentage of people don’t care for it saying it’s too heavy and bulky. And the coffee tastes the same no matter how you adjust the brewing volume. I do wonder if it’s because of the flaw of the machine or the operator in that instance.

You can get it under $1,000 on Amazon and mind you the price there fluctuates from day to day. If you check often, you may catch a good sale to save some money.

Designed and manufactured by Jura, “THE name in town” when it comes to super-automatic category, it’s hard to go wrong with the purchase. Style, function and performance are the winning formula for Jura to compete and prevail in a very hot-contested industry.
