What Is the Best Manual Coffee Grinder?

Whether you are thinking about buying for a coffee lover this holiday or a “just because” gift, a manual coffee grinder should be on your short list. Here is why:

1. Portable, light-weight and compact that you can take it anywhere, to your office, the next camping trip or when you travel across the country on business.

2. Customize the grind as fine or as coarse to suit your brewing method. The grind size is consistent and uniformed for hot water to penetrate resulting in a great cuppa.

3. Very minimal heat and friction so coffee oil and aroma are retained.

4. Very affordable, most under $50 and less prone to having problems as there are no electric or electronic parts.

5. Eco-friendly and great for your mental health. No electricity required. It’s a mandatory break from work and connection to electronic devices. You’ll have to concentrate on cranking the handle to transform coffee beans to ground coffee.

What is a manual coffee grinder – It’s a simple device with two grinding surfaces (burrs) rotating against each other via a handle/crank. Ground coffee is collected in a container beneath. The grinder may be made of stainless steel, carbon steel or ceramic. Each has its own advantages. Stainless steel is durable and doesn’t react to acid; carbon steel is very hard with sharpest edges and efficient in getting the job done; ceramic is also hard and very durable. It’s great for multi-use grinding (e.g. salt) because it doesn’t corrode.

Brands – There are many brands but perhaps the most popular one is Hario, a Japanese manufacturer of coffee and tea appliances. It carries an impressive collection of manual grinders in different styles at varying price points, but all under $100. I included two models representing one of the bestsellers (Hario Skerton) and a high-end (Roman N). Some of the unique features Hario hand grinders bring: 1) Ceramic burrs that produce very consistent coffee grind and last for a lifetime with proper use and care; 2) Easy to use, adjust and clean; 3) Affordable under $50 for most models as opposed to hundreds of dollars for an electric model.
